biography
stephen garrett dewyer works as an artist, UX designer, web developer, Founding Director of Art in Tech Services Inc and Founder of public arts commission, a grass-roots, 501(c)(4) non-profit organization dedicated to connecting the art community to democratic movements. He makes environmentally-responsive installations as a part of performances, frequently using digital media. His works focus on how the dissemination of images from one location to another location always-already shows another subject inflecting the subject of the work.
dewyer's works have shown in national and international exhibitions. Solo exhibitions of dewyer’s work include audio listening audio: acoustic inversion (2013) at North End Studios and throw stones at glass houses (2012) at Cave Gallery, both in Detroit, Michigan. Recent works of his include digital renderings of potential projects using yellow mesh fabric in reproductions of Modernist art that appear altered by their environment.
In 2021, dewyer launched Art in Tech Services Inc to employ experts in art to improve technology. The company works to include art workers in the tech field in the belief that technology is better with art.
In 2017, dewyer founded public arts commission to include art in important political movements while giving a platform for the art community participating in politics to build a greater political imaginary.
From 2013-2017, dewyer served as Co-Founder and, then, Co-Founding Editor of ∞ mile (Infinite Mile LLC), a journal of art and cultures in Detroit that published monthly online issues and annual print anthologies.
In 2009, dewyer curated the exhibition Propositions at Area 405 in Baltimore, Maryland.
dewyer taught art and design at several universities in Southeast Michigan including the University of Michigan, Oakland University and the University of Detroit Mercy. He served as an organizer and participant in a number of panels and conferences. In 2016, he served as a grants panelist for the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts.
dewyer received an M.F.A.in Sculpture from the Yale University School of Art in 2011 and a B.F.A. in Art History, Theory & Criticism from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2008.
dewyer was born in Metro Detroit in 1987 and lives and works in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota.
